Dressing by the decades (part 1)

Hey Lovelies! My birthday was last week! So I ate a lot of cake and looked at a lot of pretty dresses. As I mentioned in a bunch of posts lately I'm currently obsessed with vintage fashion. There's so many styles and era's to play with that it can seem overwhelming to find which era to dress up as, so I came up with a nice little list about what type and style of clothes go with each era. Today's post will be focusing on 1920's-1960's and next week post will be from the 1970's to today. Remember nothing really goes out of style, just recycles.
20's
Ah yes, the 1920's famous for disillusion and secret drinking (also what I'm famous for) the 1920's still known for jazz, famous writers and glitter. While the era is still popular today thanks to popular media such as "Z: the beginning of everything" and "Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them". The key to dresses for this era Boy-ish figures with a lotta legs (serious, boobs did not exist in this era and if they did they were not sexualized)
-sheath dresses (plan, floral prints, lace)
-tied waist belts "hip sash" (waist belts were THE thing)
-brooches
-longs necklaces of beads or pearls
-t-strap shoes
-cloche hats
-gloves
-beaded fringe shawls
-hip length blouses (again no one had tits apparently)
-tweed
-oxfords
-mid-calf pleated skirt
-slip dress
-bangles
-headbands
-Sparkles
Colors: gold, silver, black, green

30's
There usually some carry over between decades in terms of fashion but the 20's and 30's are so different it makes the 20's seems like some sort of gin influenced dream. The fashion motto of the 1930's were simple: shop smart, dress smart. (Same though)
-wide legged pants
-wrap dresses
-oxfords
-gloves
-prints (floral, polka dots)
-hat and shoes always matched
-Art Deco
-small pearl earrings
-backless evening gowns
-dresses with ruffles tops
-Cap sleeve dress (or puffy long sleeves)
-button down dresses
-lace colored dresses

40's
The 40's had two faces: strong independent women, winning the war with victory gardens and working at factories, and pin-up gal waiting for her men folk to return
-Sturdy pumps/peep toe pumps
-women did not leave their house without their hat, lipstick and gloves
-fitted jacket and skirt suit
-a-line dresses with square, sweetheart, v-neck, keyhole or round necklines
-cap sleeve cotton blouses
-belted dresses
-cross body purses
-shirt dresses
-pleated skirts
-stockings
-berets
-cat eye glasses
-large colorful jewelry (costume jewelry
-Color Palette: navy blue, evergreen, red, violet, pink, medium blue, yellow, brown and black.
Me poorly trying to sulate.

50's
For those of you who say they love vintage clothing, this is usually the era your talking about. Hello poodle skirts and Elvis Presley. Also, the era that discovered women had curves.
-pencil skirts
-crew neck cardigans
-petticoats
-circle skirt with a halter or crew neck (now called the Audrey dress)
-scarves
-gloves
-wide belts
-red lipstick
-small clutch
-flats both ballet and oxford
-pumps with kitten heels
-sheath dress with round neckline
-stockings
-pearls
-wiggle dresses
-prints: floral, plaid, polka dots, gingham, nautical and tropical
Color palette: Pastels

60's
Groovy baby! *flashes piece signs* Eh...not quite. The 60's are best remembered for the Woodstock free love era, but similar to the 40's it's a decade with too faces. Good office girl by day, mod square by night
-Mary janes, flats, low heels, tall boots, plain white sneakers
-mini dresses "baby doll dresses"
-full skirt dresses in the early 60's
-untucked blouses with prints
-narrow wool coats
-plaid "mini" skirts (mid thigh)
-high waist bell bottom
-pantsuit
-colored tights
-pop art jewelry
-swing coats
-floppy hats
-NO GLOVES BY THE END OF THE ERA
-culottes
-turtleneck
-early 60's loved Jackie Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn
-late 60's loved Twiggy and Bridget Bardot

  1. Belatedly, Happy Birthday!!! I hope your birthday wishes come true.
I love your decades look back at vintage fashion, and the seven classic dresses from you wore in these fabulous outfit photos!
Out of these seven dresses I thing my favourite is the pretty red 1930's dress in the second photo. I also love the embroidery on that 1950's dress. I also like the swingy early sixties dress in the lovely outfit photo taken outside.
Great post - a wonderful look back at fashion through the decades and wonderful photos rocking vintage fashions!

    2. You're welcome!
My favourite fashion decade (s) used to be the mid 1960s and early 1970s, but recently I've seen many of those styles recycled into the fashion of the new generation of fashionistas..
I love the short pleated mini-skirts, the hosiery, the high-waist retro bathing suits, jeans, flares, ruffles, and of course, the high-waisted full cut full coverage full brief panties I review on my blog and YouTube :D
